Durango may revel in its reputation as the worst-dressed town in America, but you wouldn’t have known it Saturday night at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge gala at Fort Lewis College.
Every manner of spangle, sequin and draped jersey dress could be found, many in black, but some branching out in Durango’s inimitable way into summer floral, cheeky chiffon and bold color.
For the young, short and shorter was the order of the evening for hemlines and high and higher the bar for heels. One woman on her way into the dinner tent decried her choice of black strappy footwear with a sky-high platform heel, necessary to accommodate her long dress. If only we could sit down all evening.
The men got in on the action as well, some topped out in tuxedos, others in simple sports coats sans ties, and the best, a somber pinstriped suit with a bright blue racing jersey underneath.
Who says Durangoans don’t know how to mark the occasion?
