Preschool raises money for children’s hospital

St. Paul’s Lutheran Preschool, 2611 Junction St., completed its annual Trike-a-thon and raised $575 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The children rode down the street for their monthly visit at Four Corner’s Health Care Center, 0.6 of a mile from the school. The children rode their trikes a total of 1.8 miles. The children also learned bike safety and caring for others.

Instrument try-out day to be held Saturday

Katzin Music’s fall 2012 Instrument Try-Out Day will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at Katzin Music and Studios, 1316 Main Ave.

This free event is designed to assist students, parents and school music teachers in their recruitment programs as well as reach adults who would like to use this opportunity to try out instruments.

Band, orchestra, percussion, guitar, piano and voice professionals will give each participant a mini lesson so students can make an educated decision about choosing a new instrument.

FLC to begin school year with Fall Convocation

Fort Lewis College’s new school year begins with Fall Convocation at 4 p.m. Friday in Whalen Gym. Fort Lewis College President Dene Thomas will give the convocation address.

Fall Convocation brings the incoming freshman class and transfer students, along with their families, together in one place for a special welcome to campus.

After the convocation, the Convocation Picnic will be held near the Amphitheater.

All new freshmen, transfer students and their families are welcome to attend and meet their new professors and classmates.

Animas High School to hold orientation

Animas High School has announced the Orientation Week 2012 schedule:

Ninth-grade orientation week will begin at 8:15 a.m. Monday. Come ready for a full day of outdoor activities.

10th-grade orientation week will begin at 8:15 a.m., Tuesday. Come ready for a full day of outdoor activities.

11th-grade orientation week will begin at 8:15 a.m. Aug. 29. Be prepared to begin classes that morning, just like a normal school day.

12th-grade orientation week will begin at 8:15 a.m. Aug. 30. Be prepared to begin classes that morning, just like a normal school day.

Advisory potlucks for ninth- and 10th-grade advisory groups will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 28. Advisers will contact each family with specifics.

A family picnic will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at Rotary Park and be hosted by the senior parents.

Business owner awarded scholarship

Jason St. Mary, owner and founder of Peak Ascent Mentoring Services, has been awarded a Colorado Health Professions Scholarship to assist in his pursuit of a master’s degree in social work through the University of Denver.

The scholarship awards $30,000 toward tuition with an agreement that he will serve for at least two years in a rural/underserved environment after completion of training.

He is also expected to participate in a community service organization.
