Thanks to all who helped make fair a success

The La Plata County 4-H community came together once again earlier this month for another successful county fair. The success of such a large event cannot be done without the help of so many great volunteers. Volunteers are truly the “heart” of 4-H.

Our volunteers include superintendents who make sure the general projects are displayed beautifully throughout the fair. 4-H judges who donate their time to conduct interviews with our youths on their projects. Volunteer clerks who check projects in with a smile. Livestock superintendents who make sure our animals and contests are running healthy and smoothly. We thank all our volunteers for their countless hours and hard work they put into this year’s fair. You are making a positive difference in the lives of many youths.

In addition to all our volunteers, our 4-H moms and dads deserve a great thank you. As we consider 4-H a family program, it is great to see families coming together and helping each other out throughout fair week. Our parents should be proud of supporting their children in a practical way. Our parents are showing our youths what positive role models are. Keep up the good work.

We are also very blessed to have wonderful community sponsors. The 4-H Community BBQ was another great success this year. The La Plata County Energy Council and its sponsors and cooks: Chevron, BP America, WPX Energy, Exterran, Rhino Technologies/Crossfire, Shand Newbold & Chapman, and Finney Land Co. helped us raise over $10,000 for our county 4-H programs. In addition, the barbecue cannot be a success without sponsors such as Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, First National Bank, Bank of Colorado, Coca-Cola of Durango, Bread, Serious Texas Bar-B-Q, Durango 9-R School District, Sunnyside Meats, La Plata Electric Association, Basin Co-op and Basin Printing. Your support and donations are greatly appreciated.

The barbecue also had great entertainment with the bluegrass sounds of Bruce Whitehead’s band Rusted Prairie; it’s always a great treat to enjoy tasty barbecue with tasty tunes. We also want to thank The High Rollers for putting on the annual Saturday night fair dance. The two-stepping and Western swing were in full effect with a packed crowd.

Now that the county fair is finished, the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo begins. I just returned from Pueblo and entering all of our general projects. Results will be out soon on the state fair website, and I look forward to celebrating the success of our La Plata County 4-H members. We also have members competing in shooting sports and livestock shows as well. Best of luck.

Finally, I wanted to thank The DurangoHerald for its coverage of the 2012 La Plata County Fair. It was great to see the front page of the Herald most days supporting positive youth development and youth agriculture.

If anyone would like to volunteer or start a 4-H club, please stop into the Extension office for more information. We have a wide diversity of projects that could always need more project leaders.
