Herb Brodsky, a 21-year veteran of the La Plata Electric Association board of directors, is returning to the board to replace Pam Patton, who was appointed in June to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission by Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Brodsky lost re-election in May to Heather Erb, who ran with a slate of four candidates promoting renewable-energy policies for the member-owned cooperative serving La Plata and Archuleta counties.

The race was a squeaker as Brodsky lost by 55 votes.

Although there were two upset victories with solar engineer Britt Bassett also ousting Bobby Lieb, incumbents held the balance of power on the 12-member board.

Brodsky is a former board president, and was chosen from a field of five candidates vying to replace Patton.

Jerry McCaw, the current board president, said in a statement that Brodsky was chosen because of his “in-depth knowledge of our company and the electric industry as a whole.”

Brodsky once again will represent District 4, which is northern and eastern La Plata County. Each district is represented by three directors on the board who serve staggered three-year terms.

Because he is filling out the term of Patton, Brodsky would have to run for re-election in 2013 to retain his seat. Brodsky did not immediately return a call for comment.

This fall should be a busy season for the board as it usually is the time when it decides on rate increases.

On Tuesday, the Durango City Council also voted to put a new franchise agreement with the LPEA before the voters in November.

Brodsky also has served on the local boards for the Southwest Land Alliance, Durango Natural Foods and the La Plata Community Development Corp.

He has a degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University and a master’s degree in automotive engineering from the Chrysler Institute of Engineering.

A native of Chicago, Brodsky has lived in Southwest Colorado since 1980. He is a former vice president of Simon & Associates, the shopping-mall development and property-management company.
