AHS, DHS are calling all mountain bikers

So far, the Animas High School and Durango High School mountain bike teams have four cyclists: Ellen Campbell, Jack Hewitt, Nano Rodd and Sierra Trout.

Brendan Shafer is coaching the co-effort.

The fall season will start with a meeting from 4:15 to 6:15 p.m. Monday at the Durango Community Recreation Center. Both AHS and DHS students will practice together, but each team – if each team has five cyclists each – will ride for its own school.

There are two races this season: Sept. 9 at Nathrop and the state championships Oct. 21 at a site to be determined. The team will camp in Nathrop, but a head count of athletes and parents is necessary by Wednesday to reserve the camping spot.

Cyclists who don’t wish to race still can practice and be a member of either team. If cyclists do wish to race, they’ll need to register with the Colorado League at www.coloradomtb.org. The registration in the Colorado League is called “PitZone” but is by invitation only: Call Durango DEVO coach Sarah Tescher at 779-8480 for the invitation.

For more information, call Shafer at 426-1435 or email him at bmshafer@fortlewis.edu.
