Durango Police Department Officer Rob Haukeness takes a photo at the scene of a two-car accident as Durango Fire & Rescue Authority firefighters assist a victim Monday afternoon at the U.S. Highway 160 and Sawyer Drive, the entrance to Durango Mall.

A two-car crash snarled traffic Monday at Sawyer Drive and South Camino del Rio, the main entrance to Durango Mall.

No one was seriously injured.

The accident occurred at 2:26 p.m. when a blue 2008 Dodge Caravan, driven by Amberlea Fry, 24, of Durango, attempted to turn left from South Camino del Rio into the Durango Mall.

She turned in front of a newer-model yellow Volkswagen Beetle heading northbound on South Camino del Rio, said Durango Police Officer Jeff Tipton.

The Volkswagen hit the passenger side of the van and tipped it onto its driver’s side.

Fry had a flashing yellow arrow when she attempted to make the turn, Tipton said. She was cited for making a left turn in front of approaching traffic, he said.

Dawn Read, who witnessed the crash, said Fry appeared “nonchalant” about making the left turn.

The driver of the Volkswagen, Hazel Harold of Bayfield, didn’t appear to hit her brakes before the impact, Read said.

She was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center with abrasions on her leg, Tipton said.

Both drivers were using seat belts.

Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be factors.
