Searchers rescue local woman after ATV accident on state lands

A local woman was rescued Tuesday after she suffered minor injuries in an all-terrain vehicle accident in northwest La Plata County.

“La Plata County Search and Rescue and the La Plata County Mounted Patrol assisted her back down to her vehicle and back down to town,” said Butch Knowlton, director of the La Plata County Office of Emergency Preparedness. “This was a nice one today. She had a GPS unit and good cell coverage, so she could tell us exactly where she was, and I could talk to her once she called 911.”

The woman’s age and name could not be released pending notification of her family. Knowlton said while her injuries appeared minor, they prevented her from driving herself out, and she would be transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center.

Knowlton said the woman was alone while riding her ATV on Colorado state lands when the accident occurred about two miles north of County Road 120.

“I don’t know yet if she has a (Colorado Outdoor Recreation Search and Rescue Card),” Knowlton said. “We’re hoping to push outdoor enthusiasts to purchase them because they’re very beneficial for them and for us. It helps defray our expenses.”
