United network outage leads to flight delays

United Airlines had a network outage that left its website down and delayed flights across the U.S., including at the Durango-La Plata County Airport.

A flight scheduled to take off at 4:01 p.m. was delayed because of the outage, said Don Brockus, a spokesman for the airport.

Tuesdays are slower days for the airport, so the impact of the outage was minimal, Brockus said. The airport typically has a scheduled gap in flights during the mid-afternoon, and the majority of the outage occurred during that gap.

“My perception is that United staff remained calm and worked effectively with passengers to keep them informed of what was going on,” he said. “Everybody stayed pretty calm for such a massive glitch.”

Staff members at the Durango airport first noticed the outage at about 2:15 p.m., Brockus said.

Flights not already in the air were grounded, and those filled with passengers ready for take off could not depart because the computer systems in the airplanes are tied to the United network.

Customers seeking information on the United website came across this message: “We are experiencing technical difficulties. This will temporarily affect our ability to serve you online.”

No other airlines were affected by the outage.
