Aztec crash kills two men

Motorcyclist, SUV driver die

A motorcyclist in the Four Corners from Louisiana and the driver of an SUV were killed Sunday morning north of Aztec.

Beth Utley, community relations coordinator with the San Juan County, N.M., Sheriff’s Office, said in a news release that the motorcyclist, Michael Shockley, 43, of Louisiana, and the driver of the SUV, David Hutchison, 78, of Aztec, were killed when Hutchison’s vehicle pulled out in front of three southbound motorcyclists. Two of the motorcyclists hit the SUV, she said.

Utley said she did not have the names or hometowns of two surviving motorcyclists, both of whom were men. She said the motorcyclists were in the region to attend one of the two motorcycle rallies under way in Southwest Colorado, but she was unsure which rally they were attending.

She said the surviving motorcyclist who hit the SUV had minor injuries. He was treated by medical personnel on scene.

Also, Utley said, a female passenger in the SUV suffered minor injuries and was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington. Utley did not have her name.

U.S. Highway 550 was limited to one lane of traffic for a quarter of mile near mile marker 166, just south of the Colorado line, until about 3 p.m. Sunday as investigators worked at the scene and road crews cleared debris and vehicles.
