Silverton resident Dillon James Paxton died from injuries suffered in a car accident Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, about two miles north of Silverton. He was 16.
Dillon was born to David Paxton and Keri Lea Metzler on Dec. 13, 1995, in Durango. He grew up in Silverton and had just started his junior year at Silverton High School.
He was selected as an ambassador for People to People, a student civic program that shapes the leaders of tomorrow, and traveled to Washington D.C., his family said, saying that Dillon was an excellent student.
Among his school and extracurricular activities, he enjoyed distance running, snowboarding, skiing and rock climbing.
“Dillon was a passionate volunteer as is required in Silverton schools, but he always served above and beyond all requirements,” his family said.
He was a peer guide for the Silverton Youth Center and served on the Youth Advisory Council. In addition to his schoolwork and other activities, Dillon worked at Mother Kluckers and The Brown Bear Cafe in Silverton.
Dillon is survived by his mother, Keri Metzler, of Silverton; father, David W. Paxton, of Montrose; siblings Tanner Paxton of Silverton, Adam Walker of Colorado Springs and Amber Kelso of Waterville, Kan.; grandparents Gib and Joylea Gibson of Silverton; stepmother, Nikki Paxton of Montrose; stepfather, Kevin Baldwin of Silverton; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
Cremation will occur. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at Silverton High School Gymnasium. Dillon chose to be an organ donor through Donor Alliance.
