Fort Lewis men bounce back from a rare defeat

The No. 1 Fort Lewis College mens soccer team responded from Fridays loss to Grand Canyon with a tight 1-0 victory over California Baptist on Monday in Gilbert, Ariz.

I was really proud of them; you know, we knew the pressure was on to come back and get a response, FLC head coach Oige Kennedy said.

Yannis Beckers goal in the 66th minute off a nice passing combination allowed the Skyhawks (3-1-0) to recapture some momentum heading into a key opening weekend in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

We certainly tried to play the right way, and we got rewarded for it at the end, Kennedy said.

Fort Lewis will face a stiff road test Friday at Colorado Mesa before returning home to face archrival Colorado School of Mines at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Dirks Field.

I think this is a team thats still learning its strengths, learning its weaknesses. ... We know were going to get better; we just had to learn from our mistakes from Friday, and I think we did that (Monday), Kennedy said.
