The Fort Lewis College men’s golf team continued its strong fall by firing a team score of 588 through two rounds on Day 1 of the Peaks Classic in La Veta.
The score puts the Skyhawks in second by two strokes behind Grand View University heading into today’s final round. Fort Lewis fired a five-man total of 298 early on before rallying for a 290 the second time around Grandote Peaks Golf Club.
Freshman Zack Bryant led the second-round turnaround, cutting 11 shots off his first-round 78 to fire a 67 and move into fifth place individually, four shots behind leader Josh Woodworth of Trinidad State.
“It was really dry, fairways are dry ... Part of (the higher scores early) was not understanding how far the ball will roll. ... I think my guys adapted to it pretty well,” FLC head coach Bud Andersen said.
Dillon Washburn is eighth for FLC after shooting 74-73, with Lucas Laudick in 10th after a 73-75 afternoon. John Thomsen shot 74-77, while Clark Reidberger carded 77-75. All are redshirt freshmen except Reidberger, who’s a sophomore, as Anderson went young with standout junior Charlie Laudermilk out with a broken foot.
The same five captured the Grizzly Kick-Starter last weekend in Alamosa.
