Durango native Maelen Marie Cardell died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2012, in San Diego. She was just shy of her 33rd birthday. The cause of death is under investigation.
Ms. Cardell was born to Michael and Kaye Ann Hanstedt Cardell on Oct. 2, 1979, in Durango. She grew up in Durango and attended Durango High School before earning her GED diploma through the Durango Adult Education Center.
She owned Funky Thredz on Main Avenue for several years, and most recently had worked for Denton Signs. Ms. Cardell moved to San Diego in July.
She loved the outdoors and especially camping at Navajo Lake with her family and friends, her family said. She enjoyed going to movies at the Rocket Drive-In when it was still open and liked to snowboard and travel to Mexico to visit her aunt and uncle, Barry and Jana Hanstedt, who have a second home there.
“She was a gifted artist,” Jana Hanstedt said. “She painted and drew.”
Ms. Cardell is survived by her father, Michael Cardell, of Santa Fe; and numerous extended family members.
A celebration of life was held Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at Navajo Lake.
