Locally, Jesse Lane found Victory Lane in Week 1 of the Gridiron Green.
Nationally, Joe Limpert of Catonsville, Md., dropped the limp and sprinted out the gate for a perfect 16-for-16 effort.
Lane, a Durangoan, was two off the national leader with 14 correct guesses and six ahead of the ole Gridiron Guru.
I went 8-7 on Week 1, but ... it’s Week 1, when rookie quarterbacks such as Robert Griffin III outplay veterans such as Drew Brees and teams such as the quarterbackless Arizona Cardinals can upset playoff teams such as the Seattle Seahawks.
I’m not worried.
I’m looking forward.
Thursday, Sept. 13
Chicago at Green Bay, 6:20 p.m. (NFL Network) – I learned two things: Cutler to Marshall still works, and the 49ers’ are awesome. I pick the Packers to rebound at Lambeau: 28-27. Line: Packers by 6.
Sunday, Sept. 16
Tampa Bay at N.Y. Giants, 11 a.m. – The Bucs improved, and the Giants digressed, but I still like the defending Super Bowl champs here at home. Pick: Giants, 23-13. Line: Giants by 7½.
New Orleans at Carolina, 11 a.m. – Cam Newton’s sophomore slump started early, and Brees won’t lose two in a row. Pick: Saints, 30-24. Line: Saints by 2½.
Arizona at New England, 11 a.m. – Skelton? Kolb? Who cares? Pick: Patriots, 30-14. Line: Patriots by 13.
Minnesota at Indianapolis, 11 a.m. – I learned this much: AP still can go All Day. Pick: Vikings, 14-13. Line: Vikings by 1½.
Baltimore at Philadelphia, 11 a.m. (KREZ) – If Mike Vick is anywhere close to his four picks and two fumbles from a week ago ... fugheddaboutit. Pick: Ravens, 23-14. Line: Ravens by 2½.
Kansas City at Buffalo, 11 a.m. – The banged-up Chiefs are better than the banged-up Bills. Pick: Chiefs, 17-13. Line: Bills by 3.
Cleveland at Cincinnati, 11 a.m. – The Browns are no Ravens. Pick: Bengals, 27-7. Line: Bengals by 7.
Houston at Jacksonville, 11 a.m. – Foster. Johnson. Schaub. And a D to boot. Pick: Texans, 24-17. Line: Texans by 7½.
Oakland at Miami, 11 a.m. (KCNC) – Somebody’s gotta win, right? Pick: Dolphins, 10-6. Line: Raiders by 2½.
Dallas at Seattle, 2:05 p.m. – More Romo. Pick: Cowboys, 21-20. Line: Cowboys by 3.
Washington at St. Louis, 2:05 p.m. – If you could do it all over again? RG3? Or Sam Bradford? Pick: Rams, 17-13. Line: Redskins by 3.
Tennessee at San Diego, 2:25 p.m. (KCNC) – Where, oh where, did Chris Johnson go? Pick: Chargers, 20-17. Line: Chargers by 6.
N.Y. Jets at Pittsburgh, 2:25 p.m. (KREZ) – The Jets aren’t THAT good. Pick: Steelers, 20-10. Line: Steelers by 6.
Detroit at San Francisco, 6:20 p.m. (KOBF, KUSA) – I’ll never pick against the 49ers this season again. Pick: 49ers, 24-14. Line: 49ers by 6½.
Monday, Sept. 17
Denver at Atlanta, 6:30 p.m. (ESPN; KRSJ 100.5 FM) – Well, Peyton Manning works just fine. So, too, does the Matt Ryan revival. Pick: Falcons, 24-20. Line: Falcons by 3.
