Want to learn more about net zero energy?

An internationally recognized expert on renewable energy and green houses is scheduled to speak today and Friday in Durango.

Dan Chiras, a contributing editor for Mother Earth News, will speak each time in the Boiler Room Theater at the Durango Discovery Museum, 1333 Camino del Rio.

Both talks, about net zero energy, are free at 5:30 p.m. today and 8 a.m. Friday. Breakfast will be provided for the latter.

The first talk is geared for the public. The second is aimed at building-industry professionals.

Chiras has written 30 books, including self-help and how-to volumes. He also has written 300 articles for newspapers, magazines and journals.

Chiras founded and is director of The Evergreen Institute, where he teaches workshops about green building, sustainable lifestyles and residential renewable energy.

Chiras also founded Sustainable Systems Design in 1984 through which he consults on wind and solar energy, green building and passive solar heating and cooling.

He also is a visiting professor of environmental science at Colorado College.
