The Bayfield High School football team opened the new Class 2A Western League with a 42-0 victory at Basalt on Friday night.
Sophomore quarterback Matt Knickerbocker ran for three touchdowns and passed for another as the Wolverines improved to 3-0 (1-0 WL).
Ian Sandrey of Bayfield intercepted a Basalt pass late in the first quarter to set up the Wolverines’ first score – a 6-yard touchdown run by Trey Lange early in the second.
After another Bayfield interception, the Wolverines scored again on a 22-yard touchdown run by Knickerbocker.
Knickerbocker added a 14-yard scoring pass to Allec Rodriguez right before halftime to put Bayfield up 22-0.
Knickerbocker added two short touchdown runs in the second half. He also threw 8 yards to Anthony Chamblee for another score.
“The defense was stellar again,” Bayfield head coach Gary Heide said. “It was scoreless in the first quarter, and the defense was in a couple of bad spots.”
When the defense stopped the Longhorns, the Bayfield offense took over, he said.
“Our quarterback really developed as an option quarterback (Friday night),” Heide said. The return of Rodriguez from injury bolstered the offense, as well, he said.
The game also marked the season debut for Lange and TJ Pazell.
“It was a good team effort ... everyone contributed,” Heide said of the Western League victory at the end of a six-hour bus trip.
Basalt fell to 1-2 (0-1 WL) with Friday’s loss.
Bayfield will host Aspen at 7 p.m. Friday night.
