Grand Junction ruined the home opener for the Durango High School boys tennis team with a tidy 7-0 shutout Friday at the DHS tennis courts.
Spencer Weinberg was tough to deal with for Durango’s Ryder Searle at No. 1 singles. Weinberg picked up the victory 6-0, 6-0 over the Pagosa Springs High School student, who plays for DHS because the Pirates don’t have a tennis program.
Aaron Cash fared a bit better at No. 2 singles for the Demons, falling to the Tigers’ Jacob Lapkin 6-1, 6-1, while Wesley Komick was a 6-1, 6-0 victim of Grand Junction’s Caleb Gartner.
At No. 1 doubles, Tate Hegstrom and Jake Filutze downed Durango’s Dylan Blair and Patrick Neil 6-1, 6-0. Aaron Gossage and Max Prioletti picked up another victory for the Tigers, 6-1, 6-1 over Blake McDaniel and Jalen Muller of DHS.
Derek Crowell and Chris Walton put up Durango’s best fight of the afternoon before falling 6-2, 6-2 to Brian List and Matthew Prinster at No. 3 doubles, while Tim Martin and Harrison Quick were downed 6-1, 6-0 by Matthew Ness and Ben Arja.
Durango will host Grand Junction Central at 10 a.m. today.
