Former Mancos resident Jesus Valentino Martinez died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, in Ontario, Calif., from end-stage liver failure and complications from diabetes. He was 60.

Known as “Tino,” he was born to John and Carmen Martinez on Feb. 9, 1952, in Los Angeles and grew up there.

Mr. Martinez was a man of many talents, his family said. He was a carpenter, chef, blackjack dealer, pit boss, golfer and foster-dog parent. He worked for many years at the Sky Ute Lodge & Casino and the Ute Mountain Casino.

Mr. Martinez married Sara Stilson in 1980. They divorced in 1990. He moved to Mancos in 1992.

“Tino was the kindest man you could have ever been blessed to meet,” his family said. “Tino was a bleeding heart for animals and the needy. He would never hesitate to take in a stray pet or a homeless human.”

His children said Mr. Martinez was a kind and fun-loving father.

“Tino had an adventurous spirit,” they said, “and was always forcing his kids to keep up with him rafting, bicycling, golfing and having barbecues.”

Mr. Martinez is survived by his children, Cynthia Martinez of Salt Lake City and Chris Martinez of Durango; stepson, Levon Stilson, of Durango; mother, Carmen Martinez, of Ontario; sister, Lillian Herrera, of Ontario; and brothers John Martinez and Danny Martinez, also of Ontario.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to do something kind for another person or make a donation to their favorite animal charity to honor Mr. Martinez’s memory.
