DHS volleyball plays up in class

Demons finish 2-3 at the Cherry Creek Tournament, lose in the championship match

The Durango High School volleyball team continued its rugged preseason schedule at the annual Cherry Creek Tournament in Englewood on Saturday.

“We definitely saw some big teams ... some physically big teams,” DHS assistant coach Colleen Keresey said. “That’s one of the things that makes the Cherry Creek Tournament worth it every year.”

The Class 4A Demons played five matches against Class 5A competition at Cherry Creek.

The Demons opened with a 2-0 win over Mountain Range of Westminster (25-13, 25-22).

Durango then lost a 2-1 match to Heritage of Littleton (17-25, 27-25, 15-12).

Boulder Fairview beat the Demons 2-0 (25-22, 25-21).

Durango then beat Rocky Mountain of Fort Collins 25-18, 30-28 to advance to the championship match of the Gold Division at the Cherry Creek Tournament.

The Demons fell 2-1 in the title match against Ponderosa of Parker 25-19, 20-25, 15-11.

“We really had another great weekend,” Keresey said of the Demons (5-4). “We had excellent serve-receive, and all of our hitters were on (Saturday).”

She said Durango setter Natalie Bulen was voted to the all-tournament team at Cherry Creek.

“I think that really shows how solid we played all day,” Keresey said.

“This tournament helps with our experience, and it helps with the confidence ... knowing we can play with these big schools,” Keresey said.

The Demons will return to Durango to host their first home matches of the season Friday and Saturday.

Durango will play Fruita Monument on Friday night and Grand Junction on Saturday afternoon in a pair of Southwestern League matches.
