Need to get rid of hazardous chemicals?

The city of Durango and La Plata County will accept household hazardous materials at the county fairgrounds on Oct. 6.

Unwanted cleaning substances, fertilizers, pesticides, painting supplies, automotive fluids, beauty supplies, propane tanks and garden supplies are among the items that will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Ammunition and other explosives, radioactive waste and electronics will not be accepted at the event.

The event is open to all county and city residents. A donation of $20 per vehicle is suggested, said Mary Beth Miles, the city’s sustainability coordinator.

Also, local businesses can schedule an appointment for Oct. 5 to dispose of commercial quantities of hazardous material. Appointments can be made by contacting Clean Harbors at (303) 371-1100, ext. 235. Commercial waste will not be accepted Oct. 6.
