Durango Arts Center announces exhibits

Durango Arts Center’s third online exhibit, featuring oils, pastels and collages by Lorraine Trenholm, may be viewed at www.durangoarts.org. Trenholm’s work will be on display through Nov. 15.

The Arts Center also coordinates regular exhibits of local artists at the Durango-La Plata County Airport. Featured in the departure lounge through Nov. 15 are acrylic paintings by Durango artist Patrice Brown.

Student writers can win big

Two national and state art and literary contests for Colorado students, River of Words and Letters About Literature, are now accepting entries. Entry forms are accessible through the Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book website at coloradohumanities.org.

River of Words is an annual poetry and art competition for students in graddes K-12 that focuses on the theme of watersheds and the environment. The deadline for entry for River of Words is Dec. 1.

Letters About Literature is a national writing competition for students ages 4-10. Students are asked to write a personal letter to an author, poet or playwright, living or dead, from any genre, explaining how their ways of thinking about the world or themselves have changed as a result of reading the author’s work. The deadline for entry is Jan. 11.

Learn performing, visual arts in workshops

Durango Arts Center will offer a variety of classes for all ages.

Evening classes include: “A NEW Approach to Drawing,” “Exploring Water Soluble Paint Mediums” and “Figure Drawing for Adults.”

Saturday classes will offer batik, needle felting and stained glass.

Daytime classes for adults and teens are “Beginning Drawing,” “Drawing Group,” “Introduction to Color Theory,” “Acrylic Painting,” “Pastel Painting the Landscape,” “Advanced Color Mixing for Adults” and “Portrait Group.” Call Sandra Butler at 259-2606 for information. The DAC also will offer acting classes for adults and young children. Adult Theater Workshops: The Saturday Series, will begin Oct. 6. The cost is $30 for one class, $25 each for two, $20 each for three or more.

Recycle identities at costume swap

Durango Performing Arts Company will host the first “Hallowgreen” costume swap from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Smiley Building, 1309 East Third Ave. Bring a costume the kids have outgrown and get a new (used) costume at no charge.
