Skyhawks celebrate a difficult road win

FLC volleyball defeats the Mountaineers 3-1 in Gunnison

The Skyhawks celebrated in Gunnison on Friday night.

The Fort Lewis College volleyball team, playing in quaint Paul Wright Gym, scored a celebration-enducing 3-1 victory over Western State Colorado University, formerly Western State College.

“We had to play pretty hard to get this win,” FLC head coach Shelley Aaland said after the 25-20, 13-25, 25-20, 25-22 victory.

“It’s a tough place to play. It’s very loud. They have a good crowd. It’s a classic old gym,” Aaland said.

She said the Skyhawks had great success with players off the bench.

“Taylor Frederking came off the bench and played well.

“Alex Moser ... 13 kills ... did awesome,” Aaland said as the Skyhawks improved to 7-6, 3-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Stephani Sonka added 12 kills for the Skyhawks.

“Ashley Wells was a terror in the back line,” Aaland said. “She had some swings I’ve never seen before.”

Wells also had 12 digs to go with 16 from teammate Jenna Kinzer.

Makenna Christ of Western State (1-12, 0-5 RMAC) led all hitters with 15 kills. “They are much better than their record shows,” Aaland said.

“I’m thrilled to get a win on the road with their crowd.”
