New leaders take roles at festival

Music in the Mountains names executive director

Music in the Mountains will have new leadership on its board of directors and executive staff when the 27th season opens next summer.

John Anderson will succeed Terry Bacon, whose term ended Sept. 30, as president of the board. Anderson was most recently the board's co-chairman of the development committee. Bacon will continue to serve as past president. Mary Barter, former superintendent of schools for Durango School District 9-R, has been named president-elect.

As his first official duty, Anderson announced the promotion of Angie Beach from assistant executive director to executive director of music in the Mountains. Beach will succeed Annie Simonson, who is relocating to Austin, Texas.

“This is truly one of the greatest opportunities I can imagine,” Beach said in a statement released by the board. “I hope to bring a renewed spirit of collaboration with other local arts organizations and an increased focus on the many wonderful education programs that Music in the Mountains offers in the community.”

Anderson was the former president and CEO of New American Schools, a nonprofit, bipartisan, public-private partnership that creates new educational designs for public schools. He spent much of his career with IBM, where he served as assistant to the chairman of the board and CEO in Armonk, N.Y. He also held numerous marketing and executive positions for the company in Texas, California and Connecticut, and he served as director of Governmental Programs for Education in Washington, D.C.

Anderson is a graduate of Leadership La Plata, the Professional Associates of Fort Lewis College, Board of Directors of Community Foundation of Southwest Colorado and the Advisory Board of Durango Arts Center. He is a former Durango Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year and is a member of the adult ski school staff of Purgatory at Durango Mountain Resort.

Beach received her marketing degree from Fort Lewis College. Before joining Music in the Mountains, she served as vice president, director of Marketing at Bank of the San Juans. She is involved with La Plata County Economic Development Alliance, Women's Resource Center, Durango High Noon Rotary Club and Sexual Assault Services Organization. The 27th season of Music in the Mountains will run from July 8 through July 28.
