The Bayfield High School volleyball team made short work of Monte Vista in an Intermountain League road match Thursday night.
BHS, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A by coloradopreps.com, beat the Pirates 25-9, 25-20, 25-15 to improve to 13-1 overall, 4-0 in the IML.
“It wasn’t very crispy, but we found a way to battle back,” BHS head coach Kelley Rifilato said.
“All three games, we started in the hole, which isn’t good,” Rifilato said. Service errors initially hurt the Wolverines.
“But our bench helped out a lot,” Rifilato said.
BHS sophomore setter Suzie Rhodes led the Wolverines’ offense with 22 assists.
“She did a great job (Thursday night),” Rifilato said.
Fellow sophomore Kirstie Hillyer had 11 kills and only two attacking errors. She also had a solo block in the IML win.
Senior Jen Phelps had nine kills and just one hitting error.
Rifilato said senior Layne Bulwan had an outstanding match.
“She had four aces in 14 attempts,” Rifilato said. “And she had nine digs. On the defensive end, she was all over the place digging balls.”
Monte Vista fell to 1-13, 0-4 in the IML.
The match was the first for the Wolverines in the new Monte Vista High School building which opened this fall.
“They have a beautiful new gym and a beautiful new school,” Rifilato said.
The Wolverines will play at Piedra Vista in Farmington on Saturday afternoon.
Piedra Vista handed Bayfield its only loss of the season, 3-1 on Sept. 11.
