Gun Club offers help to hunters

‘Sight-In Days’ planned to calibrate scopes

Hunters and gun enthusiasts can get their rifle scope sighting checked during six upcoming “Sight-In Days” at the Durango Gun Club.

Durango Gun Club staff and volunteer club members will be on hand to answer questions, provide assistance and do minor firearms repairs. Donations to the club are welcomed, but payment will not be required.

Sight-In Days will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays next week, Oct. 18-19 and Nov. 1-2.

Hunters are encouraged to take advantage of the controlled environment to prepare their firearms for the season.

Most firing to “zero” the rifles is done at the 100-meter distance, and targets are provided by the gun club. The range has target stands at 50, 75 and 100 meters (approximately 110 yards) with provision for 25-yard rough sight-in, if necessary.

In addition to the normal safe firearms handling rules, the range requires that:

Guns are brought from your vehicle unloaded and uncased, actions open, muzzles up and placed in the racks provided.

Guns are not loaded until the shooter is on the firing line.

Guns remain racked until the shooter is called to the firing line.

Shooters have a sign-in sheet to record name, address and number of rifles to be sighted in.

Participants also are reminded to bring the correct ammunition for their rifles because using the wrong ammunition can result in a dangerous situation.

La Plata Electric Association has contributed $500 to the gun club to help it cover costs incurred by Sight-In Days.

“We realize that hunting deer and elk is a tradition in this part of the country, and we know hunters need to sight their rifles in preparation,” said Steve Gregg, LPEA manager of operations. “ ... We really want to help discourage sighting scopes in uncontrolled environments.”

The Durango Gun Club’s outdoor range is located on La Posta Road (County Road 213) south of Bodo Industrial Park.
