Not yet registered to vote? You’ve got until Tuesday

Voter registration drives are in their last frenzied days as the deadline for registration approaches. Tuesday is the last day to register to vote.

Almost 41,000 of the countys 51,000 residents are registered to vote, according to current data from the La Plata County Clerk and Recorder. While about 13,000 registered voters in the county are listed as inactive, they still can vote at their designated polling places Nov. 6 but will not be sent a mail-in ballot.

Residents have until Oct. 30 to request a mail-in ballot if they want to be able to mail it back to the clerk and recorder, Parker said. She said that 57 percent of countys registered voters already have requested a mail-in ballot.

Those ballots will be mailed Oct. 15.

Residents who did not request a mail-in ballot should have received a mailer notifying them of their polling location.

Since 2008, the number of voters in the county has increased by about 3,500, Parker said. She attributed the increase to population growth and an increase in interest in this years issues and candidates.

There are 14,700 voters registered as unaffiliated in the county, 12,697 registered Republicans and 12,751 registered Democrats. A large chunk of unaffiliated voters about 5,700 are inactive, Parker said.
