The Bayfield High School cross country team celebrated a team title and two individual titles Saturday at the Cortez Ancient Trails cross country meet.

“We’re rounding into shape, and we’re starting to back off on the volume (of miles),” Bayfield head coach Pat Vaughn said after the Wolverines won the girls championship and finished second among the boys.

Sophomore Trevor Gabbard won the boys 5-kilometer trail race, and fellow sophomore Eva-Lou Edwards won the girls race – her fifth individual victory of the season.

“Trevor won his first high school race,” Vaughn said after Gabbard finished first in 18 minutes, 2 seconds. “He was solid from the start.”

Teammate Luke Webb, another BHS sophomore, was second in 18:18.

Joe Hetrick was 16th (19:59), with Joey Webb 18th (20:06), Jonathan Rudolph 22nd (20:40) and Caleb Sapa 126th (21:04).

Monticello, Utah, won the boys division with 22 points. BHS was second with 37.

With Edwards winning the girls race, the Wolverines collected the team title with 23 points. Monticello was second with 40. Monument Valley finished third (71).

“Eva-Lou won in 19:09, a new course record,” Vaughn said. Edwards won by 2 minutes, 34 seconds.

“She was out by herself for a long time,” Vaughn said. “But she still ran a controlled race.”

Aubree Lorenzen of Bayfield finished third Saturday. Nicole Cyr was sixth. Lexi Fleming, Jessica Cusick, Maggie Zink and Ciara Enns finished 13-15-17-19 for the Wolverines.

“They ran as a solid group,” Vaughn said.

The Wolverines now will prepare for the midweek Class 3A Regional Championships on Oct. 17 at Delta’s Connected Lakes Park.
