The Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team erased the bitter taste of Wednesday’s loss to Colorado Mesa and got back in the win column Sunday with a 2-1 victory over Adams State in Alamosa.

“I think it was one of the first times all year we looked together as a team,” FLC head coach Oige Kennedy said. “We showed great fight, great team spirit.”

Trevor Gibbons got the Skyhawks off and running when he took a pass from Casey Dean, who returned from a knee injury, and rattled a shot off the post and in in the 33rd minute.

Artur Piperkov’s header off a Yannis Becker corner kick in the 50th minute gave the Skyhawks (7-4-1, 4-3-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) a 2-0 lead.

“I think it was only our second goal off a set piece all year,” said Kennedy, whose past teams had a knack for set-piece goals.

Matthew Stefanko’s header goal off a corner kick cut the deficit in half for the Grizzlies (1-10-0, 1-6-0 RMAC) in the 55th minute, but the Skyhawks held on from there.

FLC outshot Adams State 16-9 with a 10-3 edge in shots on goal. Ryan Schaul picked up the victory for FLC, which hosts CSU-Pueblo at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

“We saw that (Sunday) when we do work for each other and fight for each other, we can win games,” Kennedy said.
