Los Pinos Fire Protection District, along with other agencies, was called to a structure fire on County Road 321 southeast of Ignacio on Wednesday afternoon. Three outbuildings were lost after winds pushed a planned burn out of control.

Three outbuildings burned Wednesday after a landowner lost control of a controlled burn in southeast La Plata County.

The fire was reported about 12:50 p.m. in the 100 block of County Road 321, near county roads 321 and 328 in the Tiffany area, said Tom Aurnhammer, deputy fire chief with the Los Pinos Fire Protection District.

The fire spread to a barn, shop and storage shed, he said.

The buildings were all unoccupied.

“All three buildings were destroyed. We were able to save a mobile home and another shop building,” he said.

Afternoon winds caused the controlled burn to spread, he said.

The fire had spread to all three buildings by the time firefighters arrived, he said.

Upper Pine Fire Protection District and Durango Fire & Rescue Authority also responded.
