Universalist church earns designation

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango has completed a year and a half of study, discussion and special programming to earn the designation of “Welcoming Congregation” from the national office of the Unitarian Universalist Association.

This designation officially announces the welcome and celebrates the presence and participation of people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender.

Fellowship services are held at 10 a.m. every Sunday at 419 San Juan Drive in Durango.

Church to celebrate Native American saint

St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 14826 Colorado Highway 172 in Ignacio, will celebrate the First Native American Saint, Kateri Tekakwitha, on Oct. 21.

There will be a procession in honor of the Saint Tekakwitha beginning at 9 a.m. at St. Ignatius Church through the town of Ignacio and back to St. Ignatius. Mass will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by a luncheon at Andary Hall.

This celebration will take place in conjunction with the Holy Catholic Church canonization Oct. 21. Parishioners are encouraged to wear their Native American regalia. People also may bring any article of Tekakwitha to be blessed.
