The Durango High School boys soccer team bounced back from an early deficit and Friday’s close loss to topple Grand Junction Central 4-2 on Saturday.
DHS suffered a 2-1 loss to Fruita Monument on Friday, then fell behind 1-0 to the Warriors on Saturday before pulling even behind a Seumus McAliney free-kick goal. DHS got a pair of goals from Nick Aggeler, who scored the Demons’ lone goal Friday, and another from Ansel Schiavone to cap the victory.
“The boys were just stringing passes together and played some good soccer,” DHS head coach Kenny Wood said.
Wood was happy with the way his side bounced back after its second loss of the season to the Wildcats.
“They really bounced back and knew there was a lot at stake. ... One of those things where they went down early, but they knew they were never out of it,” Wood said.
Friday’s loss to Fruita Monument was tough to swallow as DHS pushed hard for an equalizer in the final 10 minutes that Wood said he thought his team would find a way to get.
“They made two key saves off their goal line. It’s unfortunate, just a tough loss,” he said.
DHS finishes its regular season at 9-3-3 overall and 6-3-1 in league. Class 4A postseason assignments will be handed down Oct. 21.
