Franzen, Demons back in the swing of things

Six days after having a 19-game Southwestern League winning streak snapped, the Durango High School volleyball team got started on a new one.

The Demons got their offense back in sync in a 3-1 victory over Montrose on Friday, moving to 13-5 overall and 8-1 in the SWL.

DHS captured the first set 25-23 before falling 25-22 in the second. Durango bounced back from a few too many attack errors in the second set to close out the match with wins of 25-20 and 25-19.

“They went on a couple of runs, so I think it was us not being able to side out with hitting errors (in Set 2),” DHS assistant coach Colleen Keresey said. “Then we found our groove again, so that third game was an important game to win.

“We just told our hitters to just get the ball in at this point, and we’ll go from there. Let them make the mistakes.”

Durango benefitted from some stellar defense as well from somewhat unlikely sources given their positions. Outside hitter McKenna Franzen led the way with 27 digs, while setter Natalie Bulen had 17. That duo powered the offense as well, with Franzen finishing off 20 of Bulen’s 45 assists against the Indians (9-8, 5-4 SWL).

“It was nice to see the old McKenna back (Friday), firing and crushing the ball like she normally does,” Keresey said. “We really seemed to be flowing and more in sync (Friday).”

Durango hits the court again today, wrapping SWL play at 11:30 a.m. at Grand Junction Central.
