Kenny Wood will take his charges to Colorado Springs on Thursday as the Durango High School boys soccer team, seeded 25th, will meet No. 8 Sand Creek in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Another year, another trip to the playoffs for the Durango High School boys soccer team.

Durango, which finished the year 9-3-3 overall, earned the No. 25 seed in the 32-team Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A playoff field when the pairings were announced Sunday. The seeding earns the Demons a Thursday trip to Colorado Springs to take on No. 8 Sand Creek.

The time of the game has yet to be released.

Sand Creek finished 11-4-0 overall and 5-2-0 in the Pikes Peak League, good enough for a tie for second place behind Palmer Ridge, which earned the No. 1 playoff seed.

The teams share one common opponent. Montrose, seeded 13th, split its two contests with Durango, with each team picking up a home victory. The Scorpions downed Montrose 2-1 back in September in the teams’ only meeting.

Durango’s other win over a Class 4A playoff team came against No. 30 Coronado. The Demons were 4-0 victors in late August and haven’t matched up with many other 4A playoff teams, mostly because of a New Mexico-heavy nonconference slate.

Sand Creek faced four Class 4A playoff teams other than Montrose this year, going 2-2-0 against them. The Scorpions beat Greeley Central 3-1 and Cheyenne Mountain 3-1, while losing 2-1 to Air Academy and 1-0 to Palmer Ridge.

The only other Southwestern League team to qualify for postseason play was Fruita Monument. The Wildcats earned the No. 31 seed and will face Denver East on Wednesday.
