Railroad crossing to be replaced at 32nd street

Durango will take advantage of this month’s hiatus of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to replace the railroad crossing at 32nd Street and to make improvements for bicycle and pedestrian safety along the Animas River Trail between 29th and 32nd streets.

The City Council on Monday approved contracts for a $161,656 federal grant along with a matching Colorado Department of Transportation grant of the same amount. Durango was not required to make a local match.

The work includes the complete installation of new track, ties and composite crossing panels. The city will reimburse the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad for $97,740 worth of work.

The city also will make improvements to the sidewalk, stormwater system and asphalt.
