Family, societal influences hamper students

I am writing in reference to the Oct. 16 editorial titled “School Standards.” Thank God someone gets what the real problems with today’s education are. Granted, there may be inferior teachers out there, but very few teachers, no matter how good or how much education, can teach a child who lives in constant trauma at home.

Test scores going down? Gee, guess what. Drug and alcohol addiction continues to escalate, and spousal abuse, child abuse and sexual abuse abound; guns in school, the media blasting all the horrific news they can scrape up to feed the social need for sensationalism. And, by the way, news programs should be aired late at night after children are in bed.

How does a child exposed to all that sit in a classroom for six hours a day and focus on anything? Get real, people.
