DHS student council attends conference in Monument

Four members of the Durango High School Student Council program attended the Colorado High School Activities Association Fall Student Leadership conference at Palmer Ridge High School in Monument.

Meredith Nass (2014), Katja Max (2014), Abi Moore (2015) and Logan Graham (2015) joined more than 500 student leaders from the state at the conference. Nass and Max also were selected to present at the conference. Nass presented “Putting on the BIG Event – A Day of Service” and Max presented on “Durango’s Youth Engagement Program.” DHS Student Leadership adviser, Dale Garland, was recognized as one of four finalists for Colorado Student Leadership advisor of the year. DHS also submitted its proposal to host the 2013 fall conference. A decision will be made by Thanksgiving if DHS will host the conference.

DHS band participates at 2012 state regionals

Durango High School Red Pride Marching Band recently participated in the 2012 State Qualifying Regionals at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction.

The band received the most improved band from class 1A-5A with its 2012 show “Rock of the Ages!” The band consists of 52 DHS students under the direction of Katharine Reed, drum majors Emily Sandner and Jacob Skeath, and field captain JP Skeath.

These students were selected for the 2012 Western Slope Select Honor Band held in Grand Junction: JP Skeath, Emily Sandner, Keegan Jordan-Matney, Bryce Hoyt and Maryna Pohlman. These students on Nov. 16-17 will rehearse and perform with the top band students from the Western Slope District.

By auditioning, these students were selected for the San Juan Symphony Side by Side Concert on Nov. 10-11: Nolan Reed, Mallory Shanks, Iliana Sawyer and Nick Wilbur. These students will have the opportunity to rehearse and perform with the professional musicians of San Juan Symphony.
