Former Bayfield resident Howard McCoy died Saturday, April 7, 2012, in Frankfurt, Germany. He was 75.
Mr. McCoy was born to Leamon and Goldie McCoy on Aug. 21, 1936, in Bayfield. He grew up on the family ranch.
In the late 1950s, he spent part of his Army service stationed in Friedberg, Germany, at the same time Elvis Presley was there. He told his former wife, Petra Kresser, he played softball with the “King.”
During his time in Germany, Mr. McCoy married his high school sweetheart, Joanne Hickman. The marriage ended in divorce after two years.
As a young man, Mr. McCoy worked in the oil fields in Colorado before becoming a sales manager for several contact lens companies and traveling across the country. He often returned to Bayfield to help on the family ranch.
In the 1980s, Mr. McCoy rented a little house owned by actress Jane Fonda on property above Santa Barbara, Calif., and worked as a gardener for people in the city below.
“He loved gardening and couldn’t walk by any bushes or flowers without touching them,” Kresser said. “Howard was always interested in American and international politics and in a spiritual way of life. Howard wanted a world of justice and peace and love.”
In 1989, Mr. McCoy moved to Germany to live with Kresser, and the couple married Sept. 11, 1990, in Las Vegas. The couple divorced in 2003.
Mr. McCoy continued to live in the Frankfurt area to watch his son, Kevin, grow up, but he also traveled to Egypt and the Canary Islands in search of warmer weather.
Mr. McCoy is survived by his son, Kevin Kresser McCoy of Koblenz, Germany; brothers Robert McCoy of Bayfield and Kevin McCoy of Frankfurt, Germany; and former wife, Petra Kresser of Koblenz.
A memorial service was held Friday, July 26, 2012, in Koblenz.
