Blaze destroys barn near Bayfield

Fire destroyed a barn Tuesday east of Bayfield, but a nearby house was spared.

The fire was reported at 7:32 a.m. in the 50000 block of U.S. Highway 160, near the La Plata-Archuleta county line.

The fire put up a dark column of smoke visible to morning commuters on Highway 160.

The property owner, Albert Dobiash, said he went outside at 7:15 a.m. to feed horses when he saw smoke pouring from the building.

He told his wife to call the fire department while he tried to douse the flames with a garden hose. But the heat was too intense, Dobiash said.

Flames came within inches of the house, said Bruce Evans, interim fire chief with the Upper Pine Fire Protection District.

Heat from the fire broke several windows and caused damage to the siding, he said, but the home was saved.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Firefighters had to shuttle tankers of water to the location.

The barn held tools, photographs and several nostalgic items, including a 1992 Harley-Davidson Springer Softail that appeared in a photo shoot, Dobiash said.

I thought it might last forever, he said. But its just sitting there melted. Itd make a good art piece now.

The Los Pinos Fire Protection District and the Durango Fire & Rescue Authority assisted.
