Botanical society to begin docent program

The Durango Botanical Society will start a docent program in 2013.

As representatives for the society, the docents will help community members better understand horticulture, make society projects more visible, and promote botanical instruction. Docents will share their knowledge of horticulture and gardening; bring botanical instruction to students in area schools; lead tours and engage visitors in the Library Demonstration Garden; and increase their own knowledge of plant selection and design.

For people who are continuing Colorado Master Gardener volunteers, all of the docent hours will count toward volunteer commitment of both hours and continuing education.

Candidates will be selected by mid-December, and initial training will be conducted in January. The deadline to apply is Nov. 29.
