Shakespeare Festival receives $5 million gift

CEDAR CITY, Utah – The Utah Shakespeare Festival has announced its largest gift in the theater company’s history.

The $5 million gift from the Engelstad Family Foundation of Las Vegas will go toward the proposed construction of a new theater.

The donation and new theater are expected to help the festival significantly expand its educational programs to serve more students across the Intermountain West.

Professional actors perform Shakespeare’s plays at more than 230 schools in Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Idaho each year as part of the festival’s programs. Another 3,000 students attend the Shakespeare Competition in Cedar City.

Farmington inmates protest milk shortfall

FARMINGTON – Inmates angered when milk ran short during breakfast at the county jail in Farmington began refusing to obey orders and triggered a brief confrontation with detention officers.

Saturday’s incident at the San Juan County Adult Detention Center involved 38 maximum security inmates, but 16 complied with orders when a sergeant arrived.

Deputy administrator Daniel Webb said the other 22 men kept yelling at officers and retreated up the stairs to the second tier of cells. Jailers and state police eventually fired pepper balls at the inmates and they came downstairs. No injuries were reported.

Kansas centers merge with Colo. health group

GARDEN CITY, Kan. – St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City and St. Rose Ambulatory and Surgery Center in Great Bend are planning to become part of Centura Health, Colorado’s largest health-care organization.

Centura Health is jointly operated by Catholic Health Initiatives and Adventist Health System, a mission of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. The organizational change will integrate all Catholic Health Initiatives’ facilities in Colorado and Kansas into one regional structure, the company said Thursday.

Centura Health owns Mercy Regional Medical Center in Durango.
