William Shatner, aka Capt. James T. Kirk, who commanded the USS Enterprise in the television series “Star Trek,” is using his acting chops in a public service announcement to warn people of the dangers of deep-frying turkeys.
“It’s a great taste, but you’ve got to be safe,” he says at the beginning of a 1½-minute YouTube clip that shows firefighters demonstrating how easy it is to start fires while deep-frying turkeys.
The video link was forwarded to The Durango Herald by Dan Noonan, chief of the Durango Fire & Rescue Authority.
“I thought it was a pretty impressive video,” he said.
The fire department has responded to deep-frying accidents during past Thanksgivings, Noonan said.
Tips include: avoid oil spillover, fry outside away from the house and properly thaw the turkey.
“It’s a delicious way to serve a turkey, but it comes with a lot of dangers associated with it,” Noonan said.
