Capt. Kirk talks turkey safety tips

William Shatner, aka Capt. James T. Kirk, who commanded the USS Enterprise in the television series Star Trek, is using his acting chops in a public service announcement to warn people of the dangers of deep-frying turkeys.

Its a great taste, but youve got to be safe, he says at the beginning of a 1-minute YouTube clip that shows firefighters demonstrating how easy it is to start fires while deep-frying turkeys.

The video link was forwarded to The Durango Herald by Dan Noonan, chief of the Durango Fire & Rescue Authority.

I thought it was a pretty impressive video, he said.

The fire department has responded to deep-frying accidents during past Thanksgivings, Noonan said.

Tips include: avoid oil spillover, fry outside away from the house and properly thaw the turkey.

Its a delicious way to serve a turkey, but it comes with a lot of dangers associated with it, Noonan said.
