Salvation Army seeks volunteer bell-ringers

The La Plata County service extension unit of the Salvation Army is looking for volunteer bell-ringers from now through Christmas Eve.

Two-hour daytime shifts need to be filled at a variety of locations in Durango, Ignacio and Bayfield. People can volunteer individually or with a friend or family member.

Southwest Studies director to speak

The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will host a “Director’s Colloquium: What is the Southwest?” at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Lyceum Room.

The center’s director, Jay Harrison, will discuss the various ways people have defined the American Southwest from early times to the present. This talk will address popular and scholarly views that defined the region with its people and cultures, geography, geology, natural and human history, and will include perspectives which still prevail today. Refreshments will be offered at 5:30 p.m.
