Park Elementary to host parent night Dec. 13

Park Elementary School’s December Parent Night will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Dec. 13.

Dinner will be held from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Afterward, there will be a bingo game with prizes from 6 to 7 p.m.

Health, safety council to meet Thursday

The Durango School District School Health and Safety Advisory Council will meet from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the administration building board room, 201 East 12th St.

Health staff members will lead a discussion about new federal and state legislation with implications for school health and wellness policies and practices.

Safe2Tell presentation scheduled for Monday

Staff members from Bayfield Middle School, San Juan BOCES and the Bayfield Marshal’s Office will host a Safe2Tell program from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Bayfield Town Hall Community Room, 1199 Bayfield Center Drive.

Safe2Tell is a program geared at providing students with information about how to create their own safe school environment.

Safe2Tell creates a forum for open discussions about issues that affect students today: self-harm, bullying, drugs/alcohol, Internet safety, fights, gangs, vandalism and other dangerous behavior.

Bayfield Middle School students and staff members will receive information about Safe2Tell during the week of Dec. 3.

Animas High School announces events

The Parent Advisory Committee will meet at noon Dec. 10 at Durango Doughworks, 2653 Main Ave.

A mock trial of Supreme Court case Korematsu vs. U.S. (1944) will be held from 8:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Dec. 13 at the La Plata County Courthouse, 1060 East Second Ave. The case pertained to Japanese Internment camps during World War II. For the trial, students will assume the roles of judges, lawyers and witnesses as they seek to determine whether or not Fred Korematsu is guilty of violating the Civilian Exclusion Order, which removed 120,000 Japanese Americans from the West Coast and into internment camps. Student judges also will decide whether or not Executive Order 9066 was constitutional.

A staff member and teacher appreciation luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 21 at Animas High School. Volunteers who are interested in bringing food or helping with the event can email
