Former Durango resident John Devin Montoya died after being struck by a pickup Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012, in Hugo, Okla. He turned 38 five days earlier.

Mr. Montoya was born Nov. 22, 1974, in Spokane, Wash., to James Montoya and Dorothy “Deedee” Howe. He most recently was a resident of Fort Towson, Okla., about 15 miles from Hugo.

He lived in Durango from 1995 to 2012 but also spent his summers with his grandparents in Durango when he was younger, his family said.

Mr. Montoya did landscaping in Durango during the summer, placing an ad in the The Durango Herald’s “Who can do it” section of the classifieds.

He also was a former member of the Elks Club in Durango.

When his son, Kenny, was born, Mr. Montoya became a mostly stay-at-home dad.

A student at Kiamichi Technology Centers in Hugo, Mr. Montoya had lived in the Fort Towson, Okla., area for the last five months, moving there from Las Vegas.

He enjoyed the mountains, fishing and camping. He loved to read and write, He was working on his second screenplay with the goal of completing it by Christmas.

His wife, Angela Lewis, is expecting their third child in April.

Mr. Montoya is survived by his wife, Angela Lewis of Fort Towson, Okla.; son, Kenny Montoya, of Fort Towson; daughter, Mariah Montoya, of Fort Towson; mother, Dorothy “Deedee” Howe of Las Vegas; grandmother Elizabeth Howe of Las Vegas; sisters, Jenifer Montoya and Jaime Montoya, both of Las Vegas; brother, David Montoya of Las Vegas; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.

A funeral will be held at a later date.
