The Demons haven’t needed many points; they’ve got defense.
The Durango High School boys basketball team forced Kirtland Central into more than 20 turnovers and less than 30-percent shooting from the field to win its fifth consecutive game, this one 37-27 on Tuesday night in Kirtland, N.M.
“Another low-scoring game. I don’t know what it is with us this year,” DHS head coach Alan Batiste said. “We’re really just not shooting the basketball well on offense.
“Overall I’m still excited because we’re stepping up on defense, and defense is winning us games. Defense gets it done.”
Nick Hamlin and Willy Frownfelter each scored 10 points to lead the Demons on offense.
On defense, Batiste said the effort came from all around.
“It was just an overall team effort. That’s all I’ve been asking for is helping each other,” Batiste said.
Durango (5-0) will take the weekend off before hosting regional rival Bayfield in a nonconference game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
