Ignacio resident Filidelfio Velasquez died Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at his home. He was 72.
Known as “Phil,” he was born to Augustine and Felicita Velasquez on May 10, 1940, in Ignacio. He was one of 14 children.
Mr. Velasquez grew up in Ignacio and attended school there, graduating from Ignacio High School in 1960. In high school, he excelled in football, basketball and wrestling.
After graduation, Mr. Velasquez began working as a carpenter. He worked for the Southern Ute Head Start for 27 years.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting and horseback riding. Mr. Velasquez attended his grandchildren’s sporting events and enjoyed time with them and his great-grandchildren. He liked going to the Shiprock Fair and spending his Saturdays on shopping sprees with his Uncle Fidel Velasquez.
Mr. Velasquez is survived by his companion of almost four decades, Lesida Archuleta, of Ignacio; daughters Annette Velasquez of Ignacio and Tina Naranjo of Bayfield; brothers Sam Velasquez and Alex Velasquez of Ignacio; sisters Prescilla Holman of Farmington, Virginia Velasquez, Georgiann Alcon and Marlene Rodriguez, all of Bloomfield, N.M., and Martha Monte of Magna, Utah: seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, also at St. Ignatius. The Rev. Douglas Hunt will officiate. Burial will occur at Ignacio West Cemetery in Ignacio.
