Durango High School girls basketball couldn’t quite match the firepower of Pueblo County, falling 47-39 to the host school Day 2 of the Lady Hornet Holiday Tournament on Friday in Pueblo.
The Demons (1-1) dug themselves a hole in the first half, going down by nine points at intermission. They were better in the second half, playing the Hornets to a near standstill, but Durango couldn’t quite muster the run it needed to get over the top and pick up the victory.
“They had point guards that were really fast,” Durango head coach Nancy Smith said. “They penetrated a few times on us. They got more open looks than we did in the first half. They hit more shots than we did.”
The Demons took a step back offensively after hanging 53 on Harrison in their tournament opener Thursday.
Katie Wiegert led the way for Durango with seven points, while Shanelle Bogus pulled down eight rebounds.
Despite the result, Smith said she was pleased with the way her team performed in every aspect but the final score.
“We played really well ... but we just did not come out on top,” she said.
DHS will face Greeley Central at 11 a.m. today before wrapping the weekend with a game later in the afternoon against an undetermined opponent.
