Josh Gallegos and Christian Knoll led the Ignacio High School wrestling team Saturday at the annual Dove Creek Invitational.
Gallegos, in his first high school wrestling tournament, finished fourth in the 285-pound (heavyweight) division.
Knoll finished fourth in his 182-pound weight class at Dove Creek and went 3-2 on the day.
“Josh, I tell you what, he’s never wrestled before. He’s really improved,” Ignacio head coach Bob Overturf said.
“He’s picking things up quickly,” Overturf said of the fledgling heavyweight. “I’m really happy for him and for Christian (Knoll), too.”
Several other Ignacio wrestlers picked up wins at Dove Creek but didn’t make the podium.
Taylor Smith was 2-2 at 120 pounds.
Kyle Bailey was 1-3 at 126.
David Cooper was 1-3 at 132.
Mike Perez was 1-3 at 152.
Ruben Velasquez was 2-2 at 160.
Blane Mickey was 1-3 at 170.
“It’s improvement,” Overturf said. “We have work to do. These guys will take some lumps this year.
“But we did better (Saturday), and that’s what you want,” Overturf said.
The Bobcats will return to tournament action at Bloomfield (N.M.) next Friday and Saturday.
