Durango resident Billie Joe Gibson Sr. died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, in Durango. He was 78.

Mr. Gibson was born to Walter and Fern Gibson on July 31, 1934 in Flippin, Ark. He was one of nine children.

He was drafted out of high school and served in the Marines during the Korean War.

After he returned from his military service, he married Donna Clements. The marriage later ended in divorce.

Mr. Gibson was a farmer from the late 1950s to the early 1960s near Brighton. After working construction, he became a security officer for Vanguard Security for more than two decades. The company gave him the rank of master sergeant.

In June 1986, he married Jewell White while they were living in Denver. They moved to Durango in 1992.

Mr. Gibson was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying fishing and hunting. His family said he was known as a jack-of-all-trades and could fix almost anything.

He was very caring and loving and special in many ways, his wife, Jewell, said.

Mr. Gibson is survived by his wife, Jewell Gibson, of Durango; children Pamela Gibson of Durango, Galen Gibson of Evergreen, Daniel Gibson of Englewood, Billie Gibson Jr. of Broomfield and Robert Gibson of Denver; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2012, at Hood Mortuary Chapel, 1261 East Third Ave., in Durango.
