‘Back to the drawing board’ for DHS boys

Two consecutive losses quickly stole the momentum the Demons had built.

The Durango High School boys basketball team (7-8, 3-2 Class 4A/5A Southwestern League) dropped a 54-48 game at Fruita Monument (4-13, 2-2 SWL) on Saturday. The loss came one day after the Demons saw their four-game winning streak snapped at Montrose.

“It’s back to the drawing board,” DHS head coach Alan Batiste said. “We’re not far away. We are where we want to be, but it was a tough weekend shooting compared to last weekend.”

DHS hit a wall in the first half, scoring only 16 points. The Demons scored 18 points in the fourth quarter thanks to some successful 3-point attempts, but it wasn’t enough in the final minute.

Lucas Baken led the Demons with 15 points, scoring five in the second quarter and 10 in the fourth. Gabe Gilleland added eight points, all in the third quarter.

Nate Atencio, Josh Hobson and Scott Morse all scored six points for DHS.

Post players gave the Demons’ defense fits for the second game in a row. Fruita Monument’s Javen Gumber and Trey Morrill each scored 15 points, with most coming in the paint.

“We weren’t getting stops and gave them a lot of easy buckets,” Batiste said. “The rotations were slow.”

DHS will travel to Grand Junction on Friday for two games against Grand Junction Central and Grand Junction, the two teams the Demons beat at home a week ago, to open league play.

“We have to fix it up and be ready to go next weekend,” Batiste said.
